Marta is indeed a special hound as she came to us all the way from the Scooby refuge in Spain.  Marta is a Spanish galgo, which is a sighthound mix, possibly Irish greyhound and sloughi or deerhound.  The galgo was bred for hunting and coursing and is an elegant sighthound.  Unscrupulous breeding brought with it beautiful variations in color, coat and size.  Marta has a short coat, like a greyhound, and a short, compact body.  Other galgos have varying degrees of long or wiry coats, as seen in the Scottish deerhound and other sighthounds.  The galgo is a sighthound similar to the racing greyhound, although they are generally smaller.  Like all sighthounds, the galgo is fast and agile.  They tend to be very playful, moreso than their racing counterparts.  They are capable of jumping fences and must always be leashed when outside a fenced area.  Galgos bond strongly with their adoptive families and the emergence of their comical personalities is a wonderful experience!  (For more information on the Spanish galgo, click here.  For an explanation of the differences between the galgo and the greyhound, click here. )

Marta is a delightful girl!  She has much to learn about living in a loving home, but she is a sweet girl that is eager to learn.  Marta is extremely affectionate and likes to give hugs.  She likes nothing better than a good belly rub! Marta is playful and enjoys romping around the yard.  She is very vocal when she plays; her tail is always wagging and she keeps play bowing to the other dogs to keep the fun going!  Marta can often be found "cockroaching" - on her back with her legs splayed every which way in the air!  She is keenly interested in her surroundings, and is cautiously curious about new things.  Marta is a fairly confident girl, and is going to make some lucky adopter a very special hound!
